Born in Malone, New York on 28 July 1895, he graduated from the New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts in 1919 where he studied piano and organ. In 1921 he became the Director of the Music Department at Adrian College, Adrian, Michigan. He taught at Adrian College for 44 years. Dr. Spencer passed away on 3 September 1967. Later, Adrian College named their music and performing arts building in his honor. Dr. Spencer played the piano, the cello, and the organ.
